ISU Accounting Students Evolve into Sought-After ESG Advisors

On June 30, in celebration of Accountants’ Day, the faculty members and students of the  Department of Accounting extended their highest respect to all professional accountants. As one of  the most prominent training grounds for accounting talent in southern Taiwan, the Department has,  since its founding, helped over 80 students become certified accountants and more than 200 obtain  bookkeeping licenses. Its alumni can now be found working at the Big Four accounting firms,  publicly listed companies, government agencies, and financial institutions, earning the Department  a strong reputation in the industry for producing highly competent professionals.

What truly sets the Department apart as a major cradle for cultivating professional accounting talent  in Taiwan is the number of licenses earned or graduate employment outcomes and its commitment  to bridging theory and practice. By placing practical application at the heart of its curriculum, the  Department has redefined the traditionally theory-heavy approach of accounting education. To  ensure students gain real-world experience during their studies, the Department has developed three  major practice-based platforms: ERP-integrated courses, a tax service volunteer team, and an industry internship program. Through ERP system integration, students learn digitalized accounting  processes, a strategy that earned the Department the “Outstanding ERP Education Program Award”  in Academic Year 2024, with over 300 students certified as ERP application specialists to date. Now in its 28th year, the tax service volunteer team is a household name in Kaohsiung, providing  frontline assistance to the public during the peak tax filing season and earning the affectionate  reputation as the “warmest student volunteers.” Meanwhile, the industry internship program  connects juniors and seniors directly with the workplace, helping them develop problem-solving  skills early and become job-ready professionals sought after by employers.

The role of accountants is evolving. Financial reporting is no longer the sole focus, as ESG and  sustainability disclosure are becoming the new language of the profession. Anticipating this shift,  the Department has taken the lead by collaborating with the College of Management to establish an “ESG Talent Development Hub,” launching an interdisciplinary path that integrates accounting with  ESG. This year, the Department introduced a program titled “Green Collar Talent Cultivation in the  Era of Carbon Pricing,” backed by NT$2.5 million in funding from the Ministry of Education. The  curriculum incorporates international standards such as SASB (Sustainability Accounting Standards  Board) and TCFD (Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures), equipping students with  the skills to conduct carbon inventories, write sustainability reports, and understand the integration  of financial and non-financial attestation. Traditional white-collar accountants are being  transformed into in-demand green-collar sustainability consultants. Over the past two years, the  Department has worked with more than 20 companies in southern Taiwan, across industries  including metalworking, manufacturing, and biomedical, to help implement ISO 14064 and ISO  14067 standards and complete carbon footprint and GHG inventories. Notable partners include Vertex Precision, Pong Bo Screw Corporation, and Homn Reen. Students are deeply involved in  these projects, enhancing corporate ESG transparency and carbon management capabilities, while  demonstrating how academic knowledge can be converted into real-world sustainability value. In  addition, the Department actively engages in government-led initiatives such as low-carbon  transformation for the biomedical industry and the ESG Industry Support Tour for the metal sector,  reinforcing its commitment to industry-university collaboration and social responsibility.

Driven by digital transformation and sustainability, the Department redefines traditional accounting  education by focusing on professionalism, practical experience, and ESG integration. Beyond  helping students obtain certifications, the Department aims to equip them with the agility and  communication skills needed to respond to evolving industry trends. Accountants are no longer  confined to financial reporting. They are now catalysts for corporate sustainability and  transformation. With solid expertise in finance, carbon inventory, and ESG, accounting graduates of  ISU are poised to become industry-ready professionals and trusted advisors in both financial and  sustainable development.
