Dreams in Harmony: Jan’s Journey at ISU
Introduction
Jan’s story begins in a small barrio in the Philippines—where resources were limited, but ambition was not. Growing up in a household that had “just enough,” he never imagined that one day he would become a leader in international events and the founder of a performing arts society in Taiwan. His journey at I-Shou University (ISU) is one of transformation—driven by courage, community, and creativity.
“No matter who you are, no matter where you come from, your dreams are valid.”

Finding Strength Through Support and Self-Reflection
Jan’s scholarship to ISU did more than ease financial stress—it gave him the freedom to fully engage in university life.
“The scholarship has intensely helped me focus more on my academics rather than stressing on financial burden.”
With that support, he immersed himself in leadership roles and extracurriculars. But the help he received also came with pressure.
“It really took a village for me to get to I-Shou University… I have to make sure that I make everyone proud.”
To manage the expectations, Jan turned inward.
“I always remind myself that I am a work in progress, and I always do my hundred percent in whatever I do.”
This mindset helped him stay focused on personal growth, not just performance.
Leading Through Culture and Connection
One of Jan’s most impactful contributions at ISU was taking on a leadership role in the Cultural Ambassador Competition, an event that brought together students from different nationalities to share their talents and cultures.
“I knew I had the perfect opportunity to create something that could gather people in one room where we can freely share our talent, skills, culture, and differences.”
The event was more than just a show—it was a celebration of identity and unity. But behind the scenes, it was also a true test of Jan’s leadership. On the eve of the Coronation Night in 2022, the team had to completely rework the event schedule.
“We had to make last-minute changes the night before the show to adjust the runtime.”
That night, Jan and his team—stage managers, hosts, technical crew—gathered in a small apartment and worked through the early morning hours to rewrite major parts of the script.
“Everyone was very tired, yet I really saw how cooperative everybody was. That room was composed of people from different parts of the world speaking different languages, but we came together to make the show a perfect one.”
Jan realized that effective leadership isn’t just about directing—it’s about supporting and uplifting the people around you.
“It was my duty to encourage and motivate everyone despite the exhaustion.”
Creating a Home for Artists: Founding IPAS
Outside of formal events, Jan noticed a creative energy among students on campus. With a few friends who loved performing, he started what would become the International Performing Arts Society (IPAS).
“It was really just a bunch of international students who were looking to do something for fun, such as dancing or singing, in the start. But what we didn’t know was that we were able to create a safe space.”
This “fun” group quickly evolved into a supportive community for students from different backgrounds who loved music, theater, and creative expression. One of their first big performances was on Children’s Day in Tainan City.
“Representing the school during the Children’s Day in Tainan City was one of our first performances as a group. That first experience really helped us build a stronger foundation within.”
As IPAS grew, it welcomed all kinds of artists—musicians, dancers, crafters—offering workshops, performances, and a creative space where students could be unapologetically themselves.

A Message for the Future
Reflecting on everything he accomplished; Jan still holds tight to the belief that kept him going:
“No matter who you are, no matter where you come from, your dreams are valid.”
He remembers long nights, moments of doubt, and the dreams too big for his childhood home.
“My house back then couldn’t fit all the big dreams I had for myself and my family.”
Now, as an ISU alumnus preparing for life after university, Jan leaves this advice for current students:
“Bet on yourself and take a seat at the table.”
“Yes, sometimes it is scary to take on bigger challenges, but it is what we need to grow.”
Whether you’re applying for a scholarship, starting a student club, or stepping up to lead a team—take the chance. Because like Jan, you might just inspire others to do the same.
Conclusion
Jan’s story reminds us that leadership is not just about taking charge—it’s about lifting others, embracing diversity, and believing in yourself even when it’s difficult. With support, determination, and a passion for connection, dreams can become reality—no matter where they begin.
