ISU Nurtures AI Talent with Campus-based Supercomputer

A map of Taiwan caught the world’s attention! On June 2, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang delivered a lecture on “Opening a New Era of Industrial Revolution,” emphasizing that AI represents a new industrial revolution. He displayed a map of Taiwan during his speech, drawing international attention. Not only does NVIDIA’s supply chain revolve around Taiwan, but 17 Taiwanese universities were highlighted, including ISU. ISU has precisely anticipated future trends. As early as 2018, ISU proactively launched a ten-year plan aimed at the interdisciplinary integration of intelligent technology and health medicine within its various colleges. This initiative keeps pace with the times and positions ISU as a cradle for nurturing future AI technology elite talents.

In 2020, ISU established the College of Intelligent Science and Technology and installed the second NVIDIA supercomputer in Taiwan, forming a partnership with NVIDIA. This supercomputer is utilized for industry-university collaboration with 22 enterprises and government units, including YUAN High-Tech Development Co., Ltd., OSE CORP., and the Ministry of National Defense. The various colleges and departments collaboratively planned and offered “X+AI” interdisciplinary courses. Additionally, ISU has set up the AI High Performance Computing Lab. ISU leverages the NVIDIA supercomputer across three central teaching and research policies. In smart healthcare, ISU is developing an “Intelligent Gait Parameter Analysis System” to evaluate sarcopenia, fall prevention, rehabilitation, and other elderly care issues. The supercomputer also supports the development of an intelligent cerebrovascular disease care platform for the long-term care of disabled patients. In smart manufacturing, ISU introduces generative AI into traditional metal industry processes to create an intelligent manufacturing environment to reduce costs, save energy, and increase production efficiency. ISU has invested resources in establishing the AI Innovation Center to cultivate future AI professionals. This center integrates AI across various colleges and departments, featuring areas such as an intelligence medicine and somatosensory technology zone, an XR/metaverse zone, an AI robot interaction zone, and an AI startup hub.

As one of the few comprehensive universities in Taiwan with a college of medicine, ISU has further expanded its interdisciplinary integration of medical and technological teaching and research resources. In 2021, ISU established the College of Medical Science and Technology to address the needs of a future super-aged society where the demand for health and medical services will become increasingly important. With the declining birthrate leading to labor shortages, relying on intelligent technology to enhance economic productivity is essential. Consequently, health medicine and innovative technology will undoubtedly be crucial for future workplace competitiveness.

ISU has further expanded AI technology into the field of arts. The Department of Emerging Media Design in the College of Communication and Design has collaborated with NVIDIA and GIGABYTE Technology to establish the first NVIDIA Studio x GIGABYTE collaboration space on campus. Faculty members and students utilize integrated hardware and software resources to develop the Metaverse Center for Technology, Arts, and Design, enhancing students’ design capabilities and employability. By aligning its teaching, research, and resources with national policies and future trends, ISU has become a hub for cultivating AI technology talents.
