E-NEWS LETTER

Foxconn has partnered with NVIDIA to establish an advanced computing center in Kaohsiung. NVIDIA’s CEO Jensen Huang also announced plans to set up a research and development center in Taiwan. Magistrates and mayors across Taiwan have expressed support, with Kaohsiung City Mayor Chi-Mai Chen stating that the city is “ready.” In recent years, Kaohsiung has transformed from an industrial city into a software haven. Promoted by Taiwan’s government, the Great South Great Development Policy aims to build an S-shaped strip of semiconductors connecting several science parks, including the Southern Taiwan Science Park, the Kaohsiung Science Park, the Ciaotou Science Park, the Kaohsiung Nanzih Technology Industrial Park, and the Kaohsiung Software Technology Park, Siaogang District, and Linyuan District. This initiative is driving the development of the semiconductor industry and cities in southern Taiwan. In addition to NVIDIA, companies like TSMC, IBM, and ASML have also invested in Kaohsiung, making it a global semiconductor hub. The demand for high-tech talent is soaring, and employment opportunities are significantly increasing. ISU, located in Kaohsiung City and highlighted by Jensen Huang, plays a crucial role in this AI technology wave.

Dr. Chou-Chen Wang, the Dean of the College of Intelligent Science and Technology, highlighted that four years ago, ISU foresaw the future trend of AI technology and decided to upgrade its capabilities. In 2020, the College of Intelligent Science and Technology was established, and the nation’s second NVIDIA DGX A100 supercomputer was installed, forming a partnership with NVIDIA. Various departments collaborated to create interdisciplinary “X+AI” courses, and ISU also set up the AI High Performance Computing Lab to ensure students are equipped with AI technology expertise. Dr. Wang further emphasized that as Kaohsiung City develops into a tech city with the influx of renowned companies, local students no longer need to move north after graduation. With ISU’s robust and progressive academic resources, every student gains a significant AI professional advantage, enhancing their immediate employability.

Through its educational policies and alignment of research with government positioning and urban development, ISU precisely reflects the trends in Taiwan’s and international talent demands. As early as 2018, ISU proactively launched a ten-year plan, leveraging its unique position as one of the few comprehensive universities with a college of medicine. The goal is to integrate intelligent technology and health medicine across its departments, keeping pace with the times and nurturing future AI technology talents, thus enhancing students’ competitiveness in the job market. The establishment of the AI Innovation Center acts as a hub for driving innovative applications in intelligent technology. This center integrates AI with various departments, including areas such as an intelligence medicine and somatosensory technology zone, an XR/metaverse zone, an AI robot interaction zone, and an AI startup hub. This entire educational field demonstrates ISU’s capability for interdisciplinary AI innovation.

Located in the prime area of Kaohsiung’s s-shaped strip of semiconductors, ISU has long collaborated with renowned semiconductor giants such as ASE Group and UMC. Together, they have established an integrated talent cultivation system. Each year, these leading companies are invited to participate in ISU’s job fairs to recruit talent directly from the campus. Originating from its College of Engineering, ISU has become a primary target for the tech industry and enterprises seeking skilled professionals amidst the current wave of high-tech trends.
